Smoke Management Systems

Smoke management systems are used to control the movement of smoke inside a building with the intent of providing greater safety to occupants and fire fighters and protecting materials inside. Typically, these systems are intended to either confine smoke to the zone of fire origin or to exhaust smoke from spaces to allow for safe evacuation and increased visibility. Smoke management systems are required for high-rise buildings, covered shopping malls, atria and other unique occupancies by many building codes.

Most building codes require a design professional to prepare a rational analysis that documents the design criteria to be used for a smoke management system. This documentation presents the methods to be employed, includes calculations used in the analysis, outlines pass/fail criteria for acceptance of the system and defines the zones and activation sequences.

Aon has extensive experience in designing and commissioning smoke management systems and assisting our clients in meeting their design and safety goals.

We invite you to watch our video of an engineered exhaust-type smoke control system designed for a four-story atrium. Aon Fire Protection Engineering played an integral role in the commissioning of the smoke control system as the third-party inspector.
